ENGLISH
4391: The Poetry of Ezra Pound
DESCRIPTION:
This course focuses on selections of Ezra Pound's poetry from his earliest
works through his epic The Cantos, with
some attention paid to his prose as well. Tracing Pound's central concerns
from the poems collected in Personae to their fuller
development in selected Cantos, we shall examine his
groundbreaking work in renewing English poetry, in translating and adapting
works from other languages, in founding the imagist and vorticist movements,
in defining modernism, and in influencing the cultural, aesthetic, economic
and political literature of the twentieth century. Overall, our purpose will
be to become as familiar as possible with Pound's art and to reflect on its
significance. No previous coursework on Pound is required, but students of
Pound’s work are welcome.
CLASSES:
Daily classes will consist of brief lectures followed by discussions where we
read aloud from, explore, and debate specific poems and cantos, depending on
the particular interests of seminar participants. Whenever we have class
visitors, we will adjust our schedule accordingly. The field trip to Venice
will involve the unique chance to see and study the sources of many of
Pound's poems.
COURSE
REQUIREMENTS: Each student will be asked to give one or two brief class
presentations on assigned poems. A short essay on one Pound poem, completion
of a final examination, and a seminar paper (10-15 pp. due August 15) will be
required to receive full credit. Auditors may also attend, as space permits.

4163: Advanced Creative Writing: Poetry
ENGLISH 6193: Intensive Poetry Workshop
DESCRIPTION:
This is a course in the art and craft of poetry -- examined from the inside
out.
Through
the careful scrutiny of how a poem is made, through the practice of composing
in various verse forms and in different voices, and through the editing of
others’ works, we will study and discuss what makes a poem a poem.
While
initial assignments may require students to work in particular forms or with
specific exercises (with no limitations as to the content), most of the
course will be shaped by the concerns of class participants. Students who
have no previous coursework in Creative Writing should submit three poems
with their application to enroll by consent of the Instructor.
CLASSES:
Class meetings will include the analysis of anthologized poems but will
primarily be devoted to the reading, presentation and discussion of student
work. Students will also have the chance to explore the South Tirolean region
nearby, as well as to travel to and explore Venice. In addition to the poetry
seminars, each poet will meet individually with the instructor to discuss his
or her work.
REQUIREMENTS:
A manuscript of 10-12 poems, including revisions of poems discussed (due August
15), will be required to receive full class credit. Students will also
complete three poetry exercises, prepare brief written comments on poems
presented for class discussion, do one or two class presentations, and write
one paper on assigned poems (final exam). Auditors may also attend, as space
permits.
